    Monday’s Must Have – Etsy

Today’s must-have (OK, OK, YESTERDAY’S must-have) is appropriate for the season. If you haven’t heard of Etsy, you are missing out. As the website says, its the place for all things homemade. You can find almost anything there. Great, unique gifts, like jewelry, note cards, dolls, and clothes. I’m sure you could find something for everyone on your Christmas lists. I seriously could spend HOURS on this site. And why is it a must have for photography? Well, so many of the products photograph so well. Again, its about adding that extra little touch to your portraits. (Note all images below are from seller’s site…they are not my photographs). Newborns…

Monday’s Must (not) Have – Noise

Something a little different for today’s Must Have…a must NOT have – image noise. This is more for those behind the camera, but might be useful for everyone. What is it? Its “a random, usually unwanted, variation in brightness or color information in an image”. That’s the technical definition. More simple terms, its when a photo seems to have little dots or doesn’t seem smooth. What does it come from? Usually it comes from shooting at high ISOs or speeds. But it can also occur when images are underexposed. How to prevent it? Key way to prevent it is to make sure there is enough light. Light is essential for…

Monday’s Must Have – Golden Hour

Today’s Must Have is for those both in front of and behind the camera. There is a magical time of day to take photographs…its called the golden hour. What is it? Its the hour when the sun is rising and the hour when the sun is setting. What’s so special about it? Well, the light is beautiful…golden and soft. There are no harsh shadows or dark eyes. I love shooting at sunset. And as I’ve posted before, I will sometime get out super early with Grace to shoot at sunrise. Now you know why I suggest sunset for photo sessions. And with the clocks changing soon, it will easier for…

Monday’s Must Have – Tight Crops

Today’s Must Have is tight crops and chopped heads. I love the look of it, and I will almost always include a few tight crops. There are still a few “rules” (guidelines) to this, like don’t cut off the chin or ears. And don’t forget about the rule of thirds. These are a great way too see details in the face, the colors of the eyes, freckles, eye lashes, and so many other precious things. So if part of the head is chopped off, its intentional. Here a few of my favorites.

Monday’s Must Have – Lightroom Presets

Today’s must have is back to those behind the camera. Adobe Lightroom has shaved hours off of my post-processing. I love Lightroom – it ROCKS! One other thing that makes Lightroom so great is the presets. Presets are a one-click way to process images. I use them to make the standard adjustments on a photo. I also use presets to convert images to black and white. They can also be used to do some fun and funky processing. That 70’s inspired processing, which is really popular right now, can be done with one-click with a preset. I don’t show many photos with the fun processing, but sometimes a photo calls…
